Answers to questions...

Q. Will you measure the bowls you mentiuoned in the crew report for us?

A. Lak was a low bowl for holding food offerings. The one I purchased is 4.8 cm. tall and 18 cm. diameter at rim. It has a circular base that is 9.2 cm in diameter. Yes, archaeologists only use metric. Maybe the kids can calculate the inch equivalents. The cuch-ah is a cylinder vessel used only by the elite for consuming various drinks made out of cacao. Sometimes it was cacao cooked with cornmeal and water. Sometimes it was green cacao and sometimes it was cacao and fermented honey..

Q. Which kind of fish did you see snorkeling?

A. Fish we saw snorkling: spotlit parrotfish, blue parrotfish, plumeworms growing on a grooved brain coral, common sea fan, four eye butterfly fish...

(do a websearch to see what these look like!)

Q. What language do the inhabitants speak?

A. Amira got her hair braided by the Garafauno (sp?) women of Roatan island. They are not Maya but the descendants of the slaves once kept by the British and Spanish. They speak an odd mixture of English and Spanish. It cost $35 and took an hour for 2 women to braid Amira's hair. She loves it.

Q. I hear the conch friters are tasty-have you tried them?

A. Here is my last attachment for tonight. It is labelled "Conch shells" and may be an image of the Garifano boys who sell conch shells to the tourist at the pier of Roatan. Nope. My lunch didn't include fried conch, but I have eaten other dishes with conch and it is delicious.

We got to interact with a 2 year old dolphin named Dana. A really gentle nice kid of about 16 years old (Alfredo) helps the tourist meet Dana. He has 5 or 6 tourist stand side by side in the water. He stands in the middle of the tourists. The dolphin comes to him and enjoys playing with him. He introduces each tourist and they get to pat the dolphin but not around the eyes, ears (yes they are small holes behind the dolphin's eyes) or blow hole. Dana is 2 years old and doesn't always obey Alfredo. He doesn't punish her, but he won't play with her for about 5 seconds when she returns after disobeying him. He communicates with a low frequency whistle and hand signals. It was very remarkable to watch them interact and to sense his love for Dana.
