EMT RIDE-ALONG PROGRAM
(need a map?)

WELCOME to the Clayton Fire Department EMT Internship Program. The following serves to answer some commonly asked questions regarding the program and also serves to inform you of the program rules and regulations.

PURPOSE OF PROGRAM
The purpose of the EMT Internship Program is to allow EMT students an opportunity to acquire "hands on" training aboard a life support unit, while satisfying state and school requirements for successful completion of the EMT program.

LEVEL OF PARTICIPATION
Students enrolled in our clinical internship program are allowed to render care on the EMT level. EMT-Intern students are allowed to perform hooking up a monitor to the patient, setting up a NS or LR line and suction. If time is allowed, your preceptor may even go over drugs and calculations. You are not able to push meds, start IV's or intubate. Students are here to learn, so ask questions and get involved.

CLINICAL HOURS
EMT students can ride between 0730 and 2130 hours on Sunday through Thursday and 0730 and 2330 on Friday and Saturday. This will allow the students an opportunity to observe and participate in the daily shift change procedure, which includes performing a complete vehicle inventory. Students are to strictly adhere to the clinical hours.

SCHEDULING
All clinical shifts will be scheduled with the Clinical Instructor at school. He/she will forward a schedule to the Medical Officer at regular intervals. If something happens that will prevent the student from performing scheduled clinical training, the student must contact the officer in charge at 314o290-8485 or leave a message on our voice mail. The student is also responsible for contacting the Clinical Instructor at your program.
If the student arrives and the engine house is locked, the crew is most likely on a call. It is suggested that the student wait a reasonable length of time for the crew to return. Use the red phone box on the front of the fire station to contact our dispatch center. Have the dispatcher advise the crew or contact the enginehouse.

DISPUTES OR GRIEVANCES
If a student experiences a problem while performing clinical training that cannot be resolved with the EMS crew, he/she should contact their clinical instructor immediately. The clinical instructor will then contact the department Medical Officer to resolve the dispute. In some instances the student may be advised to leave the clinical site.

SHIFT CHANGE
EMS crews start their shifts at 0730 hours and end at 0730 hours the following day. Shift change is the first order of business. During shift change, crews perform a thorough inventory of EMS supplies and equipment and perform vehicle maintenance and safety inspections. Students are required to participate in shift change. Said participation will provide a good means to familiarize students with the type and location of supplies and equipment.

HOUSEKEEPING DUTIES
Upon completion of shift change, crews must perform various housekeeping duties, and must thoroughly clean the ambulance. To establish a good working relationship with the crews and contribute to the TEAM effort, students are required to assist in completion of these duties.
