STEPS IN ADMINISTERING MEDICATIONS

EMT's administer medications only under the direct order of a licensed physician. Without this order, you cannot administer any type of medication. These orders may be received on line by direct communication or off-line through protocols (standing orders).

Obtain an order from medical control (on-line direct communication or off-line protocols
Verify the drug, the dose, and the route
Reassess the situation when you get back to the patient
Select the proper medication
Verify the patient's prescription
Check label and verify patient's name
Don't administer someone else's meds to your patient (unless ordered by medical control)
Check the expiration date
Check for discoloration or impurities
Verify the form, route, and dose
Document what you did, and note changes - actions and side effects
Go back and perform an ongoing assessment - labocab and vitals
