Reflection on 2006-2007

This past year was a very successful one for the St. Louis Chapter of AAWCC and its members from the Forest Park (FP), Florissant Valley (FV), and Meramec (MC) campuses and the Cosand Center offices (CC). AAWCC members participated in a number of events where we had the opportunity to learn something new and network with women throughout the college.

•  The year began with the September 2006 business/planning meeting and networking opportunity hosted by Teresa Huether (FV).

• In October, Mary Kay Kreider (Human Services program at MC) shared her experiences from her recent sabbatical in her presentation "Virtual Reality: Advocating for St. Louis Women Living in Poverty."

•  In November, Deb Godwin opened her home for a presentation by Joan Metro entitled "Memories of an American Teacher in Africa."

•  Our December event, the World Famous White Elephant Auction, was hosted by Carla Chance (CC). Ashok Agrawal (Dean at FV) served as auctioneer. This event was, as usual, full of fun and surprises: lots of laughs, excellent food and drink, and great conversation. In addition, we collected personal items for the Women's Safe House and we raised $2340 for our scholarship fund.

•  In March, AAWCC members participated in a session (film followed by discussion) sponsored by Women's History Month Committee (MC) and the Diversity Committee (MC) entitled "Las Madres: The Mothers of Plaza de Mayo."

•  In April, AAWCC members enjoyed a presentation by Thao Dang-Williams (FP) entitled: "Living between Cultures in Modern America."

•  In May, the Florissant Valley campus graciously hosted a "Cooking Class with Chef Martin" where Chef Martin demonstrated cooking techniques and special recipes for summer.

This year, the chapter also produced and sold a cookbook entitled Stir it Up with AAWCC: Our Favorite Recipes to raise additional monies for our scholarship fund. Because of our successful fundraising efforts, we decided to raise the scholarship amounts this year from $500 to $750. These six outstanding students received scholarships in spring 2007:

Ildako Dorsey (MC)

La Keisha Ducote (FP)

Leah Joiner (FP)

Joyce Neikirk (FV)

Rebecca A. Salas (FV)

Lynn Vitale (MC)

Thanks to the AAWCC members who participated and helped make these events successful. Special thanks to those members who were kind enough to host events in their homes. AND, finally, we thank our outgoing officers, Donna Werner and Diane Foster for their leadership this past year.
