Associates in Applied Science

An Associate in Applied Science degree in Graphic Communications is designed to prepare students for employment in the advertising and graphic design world. The program consists of 20 hours of regular academic requirements along with 23 hours of basic courses in drawing, design, graphic design and computer art which help students decide which area they would like to investigate further. The balance of the course work will be in one of four options. The options that provide the best opportunities for employment are the Graphic Design Option and the New Media Option.

Both of these options include room for electives which enable a student to focus more closely on particular career areas such as web design, advertising, or print media. This degree program can also be used to help customize a student’s course of studies to meet the particular requirements of a four-year school, so that the student can transfer with the greatest possible efficiency.

Students in this program are also encouraged to participate in the campus-based graphic design and public relations studio called CreativedotComm. This studio puts students in small groups of designers and writers which then work on projects for non-for-profit groups in the St. Louis area. The process provides hands-on experience and gives students a chance to learn how to deal with actual clients.
