Creative-dot-Comm photos

Several years ago, the Art and Mass Communications departments decided to create an opportunity for students to gain practical experience in the communications and advertising fields. A campus-based graphic design and public relations studio called CreativedotComm was the outcome. This studio puts students in small groups of designers and writers which then work on projects for non-for-profit groups in the St. Louis area. The process provides hands-on experience and gives students a chance to learn how to deal with actual clients.

Projects over the years have included web pages for organizations such as Forest Park Southeast Neighborhood, the Arts and Education Council, and Fields of Plenty. Brochures have been designed and produced for the Metropolitan School, VPA High School, the Portfolio Gallery and others. They have designed t-shirts for the ALS Foundation and the ZooKeepers Association. Materials have been designed for groups such as the Alzheimer’s Association, Wings of Hope, St. Patrick’s Center and many more.

Students not only get to work with actual clients, but they gain experience in costing, estimating, following production schedules, and finding printers and manufactures to product the materials. Many say that they complete the class with a greater confidence in their ability to meet the demands of the “real” world.
