During the first week of the semester, it is the responsibility of each instructor to furnish, in writing, the course objectives and a course syllabus.  The objectives are stated below.  The syllabus should include instructor information, course information, expected outcomes, course requirements, method of evaluation and an explanation of grading policies, policies on make up work, ground rules for class participation, a tentative class schedule, withdrawal dates, expected classroom behavior, information on the math learning center, consultation (office) hours, and an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accommodations statement.

 

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

 

This course is for students who have not taken a full year of algebra in high school or who wish to review algebra. Topics included are operations on real numbers, operations on polynomials, operations on rational expressions, and solving equations.

 

 

COURSE PREREQUISITE:

 

MTH:020 with a grade of “C” or better, or satisfactory score on placement test.

 

TEXT:

 

Elementary and Intermediate Algebra. Tussy and Gustafson. 4th  Edition, Cengage – Brooks/Cole .

 

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

 

The student will…

  1. be able to solve linear equations and inequalities.
  2. be able to identify a linear equation in two variables, graph linear equations using various methods, and write the equation of a line in various forms.
  3. compute the slope of a line given two points.
  4. be able to apply all properties of exponents.
  5. be able to perform the basic binary operations on polynomials in one variable and to solve polynomial equations in one variable by factoring.
  6. be able to simplify, multiply, and divide rational expressions.
  7. be able to solve application problems related to the objectives above using a variety of techniques and approaches.
  8. be able to solve systems of equations in two variables.

 

 

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:

 

The development of problem solving skills should be given considerable time, effort, and attention.
