Grading Policy
- If a
class meets twice a week, 4 tests are given
- If a
class meets three times a week, 5 tests are given
- An
outline listing all the objectives to be tested as well as an in class
review is given before each test in most classes.
- Returned
tests may be “recorrected” by the student. The student earns back 20% of the
points he or she missed if the student
* explains what mistakes were
made,
* explains how he or she will
correct those mistakes and then
* works the problems
correctly.
- Weekly
quizzes are offered in some classes.
- Homework
is given every class period.
Students are expected to complete all the assigned homework with
understanding. Most homework is
collected; a sampling of the problems is graded.
- If
students miss 2 or fewer classes for a twice a week class or 3 or fewer
for a three times a week class, they earn the option of having their
final exam score substitute in for their lowest test score if it is to
their advantage.
- Presently,
points outside of tests, quizzes and homework, may be earned by
completing projects in the Structures of Mathematics courses. Projects may be considered in other
courses numbered 160 and above.
Description of Teaching Style
- My
teaching style is a combination of lecture and cooperative/collaborative
learning activities. Generally, I
do not talk longer than 10 minutes without allowing the students to work
a problem, discuss a question/problem with a fellow student, or work on
an in class project.
- My
presentation is filled with examples.
Theory is not ignored – but is downplayed in beginning courses
and is given increasing emphasis through the math sequences. (I love
those properties!)
- The
notes I write on the board are in outline form. Most students find my presentations
very logical and structured. I
like to believe that I am spontaneous enough to address any impromptu
questions and to adapt the presentation to meet a particular class’
needs!
- I
believe my strength is that I really love to teach and am genuinely
interested in my students’ success.
I ask my students to meet with me in my office at the beginning
of the semester in order to get to know them. I promptly return phone calls and
enjoy working with my students during office hours.
