Grading Policy

  • I typically give a test after each chapter and will sometimes give quizzes between tests.  I believe in a greater number of tests over smaller bits of information rather than a few tests over big chunks of information.  Tests are typically worth 60% of the overall grade.
  • I collect and grade homework each test day.  I usually have it graded for students before they are finished taking the test.  Homework is typically worth 10% of the overall grade.
  • It’s tough to learn math if you don’t come to class.  Because of the importance of being there, I take attendance each class period.  Students are able to drop a low test score based on good attendance.

Description of Teaching Style

  • The typical 50 minute class period consists of 60-80% lecture mixed with group activity or individual practice.  I usually present a new topic and then ask the students to try their hand at it.  Sometimes, a new topic is presented by letting students discover it in a group activity.
  • Class participation is greatly appreciated and encouraged.  I ask many questions and usually learn a great deal from students by hearing their answers.
  • I always try to show students how the topic may be relevant by either showing them a real world example or explaining why it’s important for future studies.
