Graphic Communications

Graphic Communications is a curriculum planned to prepare the student for entry level employment within ad agencies, art studios, printing or publishing companies, television stations, department stores, packaging firms and various other businesses with in-house art departments. Completion of the four-semester program leads to an Associate in Applied Science degree or Associate of Fine Arts degree.

Professional standards, creative and conceptual skills, typography, basic business management and related proficiencies necessary for success in the advertising and graphic design industry are stressed. Courses explore the varied aspects of the graphics field including typography, publication design, illustration, computer graphics, package design, web design, production and portfolio design.

In keeping wih current industry standards, students in the Graphic Communications program are introduced to the use of imaging computers as a design and layout tool and have access to state-of-the-art computer labs and technical assistance.

The faculty members within this program are practicing artists and designers currently active in the field. An advisory committee of graphic artists, designers, art directors and other related professionals work with the St. Louis Community College to ensure that the curriculum keeps pace with the employment opportunities in the field.

Students completing their art courses within the Graphic Communications program or those having professional experience in graphic design are eligible to enroll in a Certificate of Specialization in Electronic Studio/Graphic Design Application. In addition, students may continue their education and training by going on to earn a Bachelor degree by taking advantage of the partnership between St. Louis Community College and the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
