Professor Gulten Ilhan speaking for Peace Day, 9/21/06

Campus Ministry sponsored a second observance of the U.N. International Day of Peace on the Meramec campus on September 20 – 21.   The theme was the impact of war on women.  On September 20, there was a brief dramatic presentation from the “Complacency of Silence:  Darfur,” depicting the impact on one woman.  On Friday, September 21,  Professor Gulten Ilhan and Professor Metin Bosnak, exchange professor from Turkey, spoke about educating for peace and about the relationship between patriarchy and war.    Ilene Ordower from the “Solar Cooker Project” and Cherie Eichholz and Charles T. Smith from Veterans for Peace spoke about their organizations and about problems for women in the military.    David Peterka, a new student at Meramec, played guitar and sang an original work about responding to the world’s suffering.  Carol Wilmes, her adorable children, and several students made “Peace Cranes.”

Campus Ministry and TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) are sponsoring a Toy Drive between now and December 6.  New or gently used toys can be left in the box on the table near the Book Store or brought to the Campus Ministry or TANF offices in SC 202.
