Summer, Fall 2020 Updates

Greetings STLCC faculty and staff,

As we wind down the spring semester, I want to share a few updates with you regarding St. Louis Community College’s summer semester and planning for fall 2020.

Most of us have been away from campuses since mid-March. Our time while working from home has been an exercise of perseverance, patience and dedication. I want to thank all of you for your hard work and dedication during an uncertain time. Your ideas and input helped make the transition to this virtual world easier for our students, and you’ve demonstrated to me what I already know to be true: the St. Louis Community College family can pull together and face adversity with both resolve and grace.

We’re entering a new phase of cautious consideration as it pertains to the summer and fall terms. St. Louis City and County officials have issued new guidance on how businesses and institutions can operate in a safe manner. We need to carefully assess what that guidance means to the College and our school community. This will take some time.

With your health and safety in mind, many College employees will continue to work from home for the time being. Others will return to campus in stages only when we are able to meet the City, County, state and federal guidelines. This means in general, full-time employees should not return to campus on May 18, unless you hear otherwise from your supervisor. Part-time employees will receive guidance from their supervisors on assignments and returning to work. It is my hope that we continue to keep the lines of communication open during a time of uncertainty. I know this time has been a challenge for all of us, but I also know that we can stay on top of this issue by communicating with clarity.

Planning is also underway for our fall semester and serving our students is top of mind. Many colleges and universities across the country are, for the most part, feeling their way through this situation to find solid, compassionate and equitable solutions for students and employees. We are no different.

At this time, it’s too early to tell what in-person instruction will look like - - we continue to follow Centers for Disease Control and state and local guidance, but as I said above, it will take some time to wade through these issues. What I am confident in saying is that your health and safety come first. Our Employee and Student Engagement Team has developed a Safe Return Plan that will guide the College going forward. The plan will provide guidance on social distancing, cleaning protocol and COVID-19 health and safety guidelines. The team is also interested in your input. If you have recommendations, please send them to covid19@stlcc.edu.

Please know that I hear your comments and concerns, and I do understand that the last two months have been challenging. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected our families, our students, our work, and in some cases, our well-being. We’re working within the confines of disruption; that is our ‘new normal,’ and may continue to be so for some time. But again, I’ve witnessed the St. Louis Community College family work collectively to help our students, each other and the greater St. Louis community.

Please reach out to me if you have any questions.

Sincerely,
Jeff L. Pittman, Ph.D.
