The Beouf River

Beouf River 1996

I spent the first eight years of my life in Alto, Louisiana. My life consisted of going to church, school, and visiting family and friends. Most of my free time was spent playing in the cotton and cornfields or fishing along the Beouf River. The Beouf, rurally pronounced Beff, provided some Alto families with food, recreation and a means of transportation. For me it was recreation. I didnít swim but I loved exploring the river by collecting rocks, and gazing at the circle formed by the fish swimming below. Sometime the rotten tree trunks floating down stream looked like alligators. I never saw any alligators but Iíve seen lots of snakes gliding across the surface heading for riverbank. You always had to be really careful and keep your eye open for snakes.
