Drivers Die In Headon Smashup

Both drivers perished and three other persons received serious injuries in a grinding fiery crash on Interstate Highway 20 early Tuesday about 9.5 miles east of Marshall.
According to the Department of Public Safety, killed were Wally Owens [Wiley Horn], 25, of 1904 Pearl, Dallas, and a man tentatively identified from papers in his pockets as Travis O. Miller, 50, of Rt. 2, Box 422-B Shreveport.
All of the injured were riding with Owens. They are Brenda Felton, 16, of Monroe, La., and Walter Harper, 26 and David Degante, both of Dallas.
The 16-year old girl was reported to be in "critical condition" by authorities. Both Harper and Degante were said to have suffered serious injury. The trio were taken to Memorial Hospital.
Patrolmen said Miller's car was apparently on the wrong side of the divided highway and headed in the wrong direction when the vehicles collided head-on at what appeared to be a high rate of speed.
Owens was driving a 1958 Pontiac which apparently traveling east. His car burst into flames. He was burned beyond recognition. Miller was driving a 1954 Chevrolet. The collision occurred about 1:10 a.m.
Investigating patrolman for the DPS were Sgt. Gara Cooper and Jim Gant.
