Copper dirhem minted during the reign of Nasr al din
Mahmud in the Zengid Kingdom. The coin was minted in the city of Mosul
(given in Arabic of right side of face) during the year AH 620/AD
1223 (given in Arabic on left side of face). This specimen was discovered
by Carolyn Davis in locus 675007. The coin measures 31.0 mm. in maximum
diameter, 3.7 mm. thick, and weighs 12.3 grams. The hole drilled above
the portrait was done intentionally so the coin could be worn on a
necklace. It is not a common coin at Tuneinir with less than a dozen
examples; this coin type is Spengler/Saylers coin 66 and Paris coin
396.
Copper coin during the reign of Al Ashraf Musa in the Ayyubid kingdom.
The coin was minted in the city of Mayafarakin in the year 1225.
Copper coin minted during the reign of al-Amjad Fath
al-Din 'Umar bin Muhammed in the Zengid Kingdom. The coin was minted
in the city of Sinjar in the year AH 616 or 617/ AD 1219 or 1220.
This specimen was discovered in square 60, locus 08. The coin measures 23.7
mm. in maximum diameter and weighs 8.2 grams. The exact identification
of the coin was made by William Spengler while preparing his volume
on Zengid coinage. Fewer than a dozen examples of this coin type are
known in collections around the world; 3 specimens have been documented
in the coins excavated at Tuneinir. The only discussion of this rare
issue is given in Spengler and Sayles coin type 84.
A common coin found at Tuneinir is the small copper coinage of
Al Zahir Ghazi. This specimen was minted in Aleppo during AD 1208.
The coins of Aleppo used caligraphy and geometric designs for decoration.
This coin was discovered in square 78, locus 014 during
1993.
Armenian coin discovered by Carolyn Davis in Square 78, Locus 14. A copper kadez minted during the reign of Levon II in the Armenian
Kingdom. The coin was minted in the city of Sis during the period
AD 1270-1289. The coin measures 24.5 mm. in maximum diameter, 1.2 mm.
thick, and weighs 3.9 grams. Very few Armenian coins have been discovered
at Tuneinir and they all seem to be of this specific issue that
compare with Bedoukian coin 73. coin 1062TNR93
Copper coin minted during the reign of
al Kamil Muhmammed in the Ayyubid Kingdom. The coin was minted in
the city of Nisibis. The exact mint date is not clear, but this coin
type can be placed between AH 631 to 634 / AD 1234-1237. This specimen
was discovered by Pat McWhorter in locus 660003. The coin measures
18.5 mm. in maximum diameter,2.5 mm. thick, and weighs 4.6 grams.
This is a common coin type at Tuneinir with dozens of examples; this
coin type is Balog coin 493 and Mitchiner coin 831.
Copper coin minted during the reign of al Badr al
din-Lulu in the Zengid Kingdom. The coin was minted in the city of
Mosul (given in Arabic along the right side and top marginal inscription)
in the year AH 631 / AD 1233. This specimen was discovered by Sharon
Doerre in locus 687001. The coin measures 25.2 mm. in maximum diameter,
2.5 mm. thick, and weighs 5.9 grams. This is a common coin type at
Tuneinir with dozens of examples; this coin type is Spengler/Sayles
type 68.
Copper coin minted during the reign of Muzaffer al din Kukburi.
The coin was minted in the city of Arbela in AH 588 to 590 / AD
1192 to 1193. This specimen was discovered by Karen Lane in locus
637001. The coin measures 28.0 mm. in maximum diameter, 2.5 mm.
thick and weighs 7.9 grams. This is an uncommon coin type at Tuneinir
and correspond to Paris coin type 832, Lowick coin type 70.588-590,
and Poole 669.
Copper Zengid dirhem of either Saif al-Din Ghazi II (AD 1170 - 1180) or Izz al-Din Ma'sud (AD 1180 - 1193) from Square 1, Locus 03.
Discovered during the 1997 season. Both of these coin types (Spengler and Sayles 1992; types 61 and 62) were minted either in
Nisibin or al-Jazira. Coin metal registery 797 in 1997.
Copper coin found in Square 26, locus 10. This coin of Kutb al Din Muhammed was minted in Sinjar in AD 1199. The king is shown with a
