Birka - Swedish Viking Settlement

One of the most significant excavated Viking sites is the settlement of Birka along Lake Mälaren. Birka is an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Artistic reconstruction of the jetty and shoreline houses at Birka. This website is designed for use by school children, amateur archaeologists and professional archaeologists. The site is open to tourists during the Spring, Summer and Fall. Dendrochronology and tree ring dating help establish the age of the site as spanning from the 8th to the 10th century.
