Complex synagogue wall paintings were discovered by the Yale University Expedition to Dura Europos, Syria. Photographs from the archive of the Yale Art Museum. Yes, I have seen the original wall paintings in the National Museum in Damascus, Syria. Photographs were not allowed out of concerns that flash photography could cause fading of the pigments.
