PETERSON ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE Introduction |
|
Site Constructed 21 June, 2005 Revised 8 Sept 2005 Archaeologists and Web Designers |
A total of 31 fluted points have been discovered from surface surveys
of the Peterson site over several years. Some examples had been broken by
cultivation while others are clearly resharpened and discarded when exhausted.
Many of the stone tools and Clovis points from the Peterson site
have been tentative identified as manufactured out of Plattsmouth chert
from the Plattsmouth member of the Oread Formation that is Pennsylvanian in age
(Koenig 1961, The Stratigraphic Succession in Missouri page 111).
This chert source is not a medium to low quality chert found in Northwest
Missouri.
Broken Clovis point that has been rejoined. Dark Gray chert with white Formaniferia fossil inclusions. This Clovis point measures 86 x 26 x 8 mm and weights 19.7 grams. Flute extends 21 mm on one side and 18 mm on the other.
Broken Clovis point that has been rejoined. Dark Gray chert with white Formaniferia fossil inclusions. Measures 85 x 31 x 8 mm and weights 19.7 grams. Flute extends 20 mm on one side and 26 mm on the other.
Resharpened Clovis point. Dark Gray chert with white Formaniferia fossil inclusions. Measures 47 x 24 x 7 mm and weights 8.7 grams. Flute extends 20 mm on one side and 29 mm on the other.
Broken Clovis point that has been rejoined. Medium to Light Gray chert with white Formaniferia fossil inclusions. Measures 75 x 26 x 8 mm and weights 14.1 grams. Flute extends 22 mm on one side and 21 mm on the other.
Resharpened and exhausted Clovis point. Dark Gray chert with white Formaniferia fossil inclusions. Measures 35 x 29 x 6 mm and weights 4.9 grams. Flute extends 16 mm on one side and 13 mm on the other.
Unfinished, unfluted Clovis point base with fluting "tab" still unstruck. Gray chert with white Foraminifera fossil inclusions. Measures 41 x 34 x 7 mm and weights 11.7 grams. This remarkable artifact proves that Clovis points were being manufactured (at least fluted!) at the site.
Unfinished, Clovis point that was broken during manufacture (specifically during
basal thinning) when the fluting of the
second side resulted in a "reverse henge fracture" and the point broke in half at the midsection.
Measures 41 x 36 x 9 mm and weights 4.9 grams. Manufactuared out of light gray
chert with dark gray formaninferia fossil inclusions. The flute on one side measures
34 mm. in length.
Basal portion of a Clovis point base with single flute that measures 24 mm and a basal thinning flake that measures 10 mm. Light brown chert with gray Foraminifera fossil inclusions. Measures 33 x 30 mm. Thickness and weight were accidentally not recorded. This Clovis point was probably broken during hunting and cut from the spear shaft, in the camp, when a new point replaced the broken base.
Light gray chert with small amount of mottling. Measures 47 x 22 x 7 mm and weights 5.7 grams. The flute extends 16 mm on one side and 22 mm on the other.
Moderate to dark gray chert with white fossil inclusions. Measures 37 x 21 x 5 mm and weights 5.3 grams. The flute extends 22 mm on one side and 29 mm on the other.
Light gray chert with white fossil inclusions. Measures 35 x 22 x 7 mm and weights 5.7 grams. The flute extends 14 mm on one side and 14 mm on the other.
Dark gray chert with small amount of white fossil inclusions and some mottling. Measures 45 x 25 x 6 mm and weights 6.5 grams. The flute extends 26 mm on one side and 30 mm on the other.
Gray chert with white fossil inclusions. Measures 45 x 19 x 8 mm and weights 6.3 grams. The flute extends 13 mm on one side and 9 mm on the other. Found during 2005 down the hillslope from the crest of the site.
Light gray chert with white fine fossil inclusions. Measures 28 x 26 x 7 mm and weights 4.3 grams. The flute extends 15 mm on one side and 13 mm on the other.
Yellowish gray chert with small gray Foraminifera fossil inclusions. This point was broken during manufacturing - the first flute flake fractured the blade in half. Measures 44 x 34 x 9 mm and weights 14.0 grams.
