The Thomas Sappington House was recorded with the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 by the Missouri State Historical Survey and Planning Office. It was reported to the Department of Natural Resources archaeological survey in 2016 by Professor Michael Fuller.
A service-learning archaeological field project was conducted at the site during the summers of 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019. The project was the cooperative effort of the St. Louis Society of the Archaeological Institute of America, Sappington House Museum Society, City of Crestwood, and the Archaeological Research Center of St. Louis. The fieldwork was directed by Robin Machiran.
