Tell el Yehudiyeh, Egypt

The site of Tell el Yehudiyeh (ruined city of the Jews) is situated in the Nile Delta. British Egyptologists working at the site included Edouard Naville (The Mound of the Jew and the city of Onias. Belbeis, Samanood, Abusir, Tukh el Karmus published in 1890) and Sir W. M. Flinders Petrie (Hyksos and Israelite Cities published in 1906).


Granite Column described and published in a black and white photograph by Petrie (1906:Plate XVIa). The top end of the column has been badly damaged in the 100 years since Petrie's photograph.


Detail of the cartouche of Merenptah on the Granite Column. Petrie (1906:8) asserts that the column was manufactured during the 12th DYN and inscribed with the name of King Merenptah during the 18th dynasty.
