Terra cotta artifacts excavated by the archaeological expedition to Antioch



Fragment (head) of a terra cotta camel excavated at Antioch during 1932 - 1934. (Committee for the Excavation of Antioch-on-the-Orontes 1932-1939, Department of Art and Archaeology, Princeton University).

A remarkable figurine that no longer has an excavation tag, but was stored in the study collection drawers with other Antioch artifacts. The terra cotta figurine represents a man on horseback with a circular shield and flowing cloak/mantle. Traces of blue paint are visible in the foreground and under the horse; the rider is painted with red pigment. Length = 15.9 cm, width = 10.5 cm, thicknss = 3.2 cm, wall thickness = 0.46 cm, and weight = 165.2 grams. [Excavation study collection in the Princeton Art Museum.]

Moldmade terra cotta figurine of a bearded man that was identified on the artifact inventory card as 'probably Hercules' because of the lion skin draped over the left arm of the figurine. Excavated at Antioch in area 26 O/P DH in sub 6 during the 1936 field season. Height = 10.8 cm, width = 5.3 cm, and depth = 2.3 cm. Reg. no. 5922 - T254. Moldmade terra cotta of a woman recovered from under Roman water pipes during the 1935 field season at Antioch. Excavated in area 16 P.R. at a depth of 6 to 7 meters below the surface. Two fragments of moldmade figurines represented mounted characters; discovered in excavation 3 west of the bath on the slope of the mountain in area 14 - S during the 1938 field season at Antioch.
