Arnold Research Cave was a unique archaeological site in Missouri where a variety of organic/perishable were preserved. J. Mett Shippee supervised the excavation of the site for the University of Missouri - Columbia. He described his work to Michael Fuller and provided a copy of his report on the site (slightly adapted from the report published by the Missouri Archaeological Society).

Radiocarbon dates from Arnold Research cave include: 7180 +/-300 BC, 6170 +/-350 BC, 6240 +/- 400 BC, 4770+/-300 BC, 4230+/-300 BC, 4550+/-300 BC, and 4330+/-350 BC.

Black and White photographs of two remarkably well preserved sandals and mocassins from Arnold Research Cave were published by Professor Carl Chapman (1975:Figures 7-2 and 7-3). Additional examples were published in color as part of the Archaeology month poster.

Map of J. Mett Shippee excavation units at Arnold Research Cave. He excavated approximately 30% of the cave floor area. Less than 20% of the unexcavated deposits would survive decades of looting and uncontrolled excavation at the site.

The extremely dry sediments in Arnold Research cave allowed for incredible preservation of materials that rarely survive in Missouri archaeological sites. One very significant artifact was a altatl (throwing stick) foreshaft with a stone projectile point attached. An x-ray study of the foreshaft indicates that the stone projectile point is a concave base, shallow side-notched projectile point that resembles the Big Sandy point type.
