Stone tools from the Gravois Bluff Mounds (23SL1064)

Expanding stemmed point from Test Unit 10, Level 7 in the Large Mound at Gravois Bluffs. Field catalog number 1198. Length = 72.3 mm, Maximum width at shoulder = 42.3 mm, Notch width = 25.6 mm, Base width estimated = 18 mm, Thickness = 9.2 mm and weight = 25.6 grams. It is likely that this is a resharpened/retipped Etley point from the Late Archaic Period. [NOTE: both the Large and Small mounds at Gravois Bluffs had been looted repeatedly before the rescue excavation in 1999 and were damaged repeatedly by looters during the rescue excavation. These stone tools represent only a subset of the artifacts that would have originally been in the mound fill. Most of these artifacts "pre-date" the Mississippian stone box graves. Some of these artifacts were "accidentals" that became part of the mound fill, while several of the Middle and Late Woodland stone tools probably belonged to the first phase of the mound's construction. It is possible that there were Late Archaic burials that were disturbed during the construction of the later phases of the mound.]
