Two examples of Medieval European Swords Specimens in the collection of the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, Canada.



Italian Steel Sword, ca. 1300 - 1350. The Arabic inscription indicates that it was deposited in the arsenal at Alexandria (Egypt) in AD 1368/9. Inventory number 930.26.46. Specimen in the collection of the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, Canada.



Italian Steel Sword, ca. 1280 - 1325. This sword is close in size and shape to the Great Sword; the blade and grip are larger than the normal knightly sword of the time. The S-shaped cross date from later, in the 1400s. The Arabic inscription indicates that it was deposited in the arsenal at Alexandria (Egypt) in AD 1436/7. Inventory number 930.26.46. German or English Steel Sword, ca. 1100 - 1150. Swords of this blade type and with the distinctive "Brazil-nut" shaped pommels were typical early in the Age of Chivalry. Some may even have seen service in the First Crusade (AD 1095-1099). Inventory number 929.23.3. Specimen in the collection of the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, Canada.
