A two day shoreline survey was conducted by Professosr Michael Fuller
on May 28 and 29, 2004. The shoreline destruction in Area 8 is minor but
will increase over the years. The Area 8 excavation units are still several
meters above the shoreline of the lake. A broken Ruha (Arabic, "large millstone")
was exposed by shoreline erosion in Area 8.
Broke basalt Ruha typically used for milling wheat into flour was
discovered in the portion of Area 8 damaged by shoreline erosion. It was
not moved but left in situ.
Street with stone-and-mortar walled houses on both sides in Area 8.
The ruins in Area 8 were in very good condition with only a small amount of
rain erosion. This photograph is facing south with Areas 9, 10, and 11 in the
distance.
The contrast between Area 8 and Areas 9, 10 and 11 was
remarkable. Normal erosion at Tuneinir (like in Area 8)
is very gradual and slow but the portions
of the site along the shoreline are being rapidly destroyed.
