Tell el Yehudiyeh, Egypt

The site of Tell el Yehudiyeh (ruined city of the Jews) is situated in the Nile Delta. Excavation reports for this site include The Mound of the Jew and the city of Onias, Belbeis, Samanood, Abusir, Tukh el Karmus (Naville 1890) and Hyksos and Israelite Cities (Petrie 1906).

I made a very brief visit to the site during March 2007. Tell el Yehudiyeh is not open to tourist and very little is exposed on the surface. The pottery sherds on the surface of Tell el Yehudiyeh are the same basic types that I observed when working on the Tell er-Retaba excavations during 1978 and 1981. It is interesting that I did not see a single sherd of Tell el Yehudiyeh ware on the surface of the site during my brief visit. I photographed a few sherds on the surface of the site, but did not move or remove the sherds.

Petrie's plan of the site published in 1906. I visited and photographed the central and eastern half of the site.
