GROUP A METALS

Majority of Group A metals are found in the first two columns of the Periodic table. Group IA metals are called Alkali Metals and Group IIA metals are referred to as Alkaline Earth metals. The alkali metals are not found free in nature, because they are so easily oxidized. They are more economically produced by electrolysis of their molten salts. The members of alkali family include sodium, potassium, lithium, rubidium, francium and actinium. The alkaline earth family consist of berylium, calcium, magnesium, strontium and barium. The Group IIA metals are silvery white, malleable and ductile.
